Rally Sweden

Based in Torsby for the 2017 edition, Rally Sweden is the only event of the season held exclusively on snow-covered roads. The first iteration of what we now know as Rally Sweden took place in 1950. Known then as the ‘Rally of the Midnight Sun’, the event ran during the summertime and it was only in 1965 that it shifted to its current winter setting. Since joining the WRC calendar in 1973, Rally Sweden has been dominated by Scandinavian drivers who won every year up until 2004, when Sebastien Loeb became the first ‘outsider’, as they are known, to claim victory.

Fast Facts

  • Traditionally the coldest event on the calendar, temperatures have been known to dip to as low as -30°C.
  • Special tyres, which are supplied for the rally, have tungsten-tipped steel studs to help cars find grip on the ice-covered
  • We have a good record in Sweden. In 2015, Thierry and Nicolas claimed second place, a feat repeated just twelve months later by Hayden and John!

Highlights

  • Rally Sweden actually sees drivers cross the border into neighbouring Norway on the opening day of stages.
  • The most famous landmark of Rally Sweden is Colin’s Crest, a large jump named after rally legend Colin McRae. Clocked at a distance of 45 metres in 2016, it is one of the biggest jumps on the WRC calendar. Each year the Colin’s Crest Award is handed out to the crew who sets the furthest jump. Our team took the honours in both 2014 and 2015!
  • Karlstad plays host to the ceremonial start of the event while the rally-concluding Power Stage will be held for the first time in WRC history at the site of the Service Park, in Torsby.
