Mikel Azcona first stepped into a Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing car in 2022 – and it didn’t take long for him to settle in.
The Spaniard surged to victory in his first year with BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse to claim his first world touring car title in FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup.
Hailing from Arrigorriaga, Mikel entered into national karting championships from as early as six years old, before trying his hand at sports car racing from the ages of 15 to 21. After graduating to touring car competition, he claimed two TCR Europe titles (2018, 2021), cementing his status as an undisputed star amongst his fellow competitors.
In the first two years of the TCR World Tour, the #196 driver finished fifth and third and the final standings. Away from TCR World Tour, Mikel has also been a key member of our Nürburgring 24 Hours entries, aiding in two of our five victories at the Green Hell.
Q&A with Mikel
What is your favorite TCR WT race and why?
Macao! I love this track! The qualifying lap with new tyres is my favourite. Being so close to the walls gives me full adrenaline. Also, the races can be quite chaotic, especially when drivers are fighting for the championship.
What do you do to focus before a race?
I warm up, I listen to music and I think about the strategy for the session. Then, I like to get to the car 10 minutes before the session starts to get in the mood.
Which profession would you have chosen if you hadn’t become a racing driver?
I would have liked to become a fireman.
Who is your motorsport idol?
Fernando Alonso is my inspiration.
What’s your secret to success?
Working and training hard every single day. Constantly!
