Making his rally debut as a co-driver in 2003, Martin gained plenty of experience at motorsport events in his home country.
He made his World Rally Championship debut in 2010 with Karl Kruuda at Rally Jordan, and the following year led him to victory at two WRC2, finishing fifth in the final standings. He began working with Ott Tänak in 2016, winning his first WRC event in Rally Italia Sardegna in 2017.
Since 2018, the crew have become regular victory contenders, taking multiple wins and securing their place at WRC’s top table. A triumphant season in 2019 saw them take the Drivers’ and Co-Drivers’ titles.
The highlight of Martin’s debut season with Hyundai Motorsport was certainly his and Ott’s first win for the team at their home event, Rally Estonia. In 2024, the duo clinched six podiums – two of which were victories – and were contenders for the 2024 titles right down to the wire. It has given the crew a fantastic momentum to harness in 2025.
Q&A with Martin
What is your favorite WRC round and why?
I have two favorite rallies. One is Finland for sure because its roads are almighty.
The other one is Portugal. I have always liked it because there is a lots of variety: fast roads, slow roads, smooth roads and even rough roads. So, I think that Portugal is a little bit of everything.
What do you do to focus before a rally?
Honestly, I just think about the rally and what I need to do. Working on the pace notes and everything else. But, actually, I also think that mental preparation is very important.
Which profession would you have chosen if you hadn’t become a rally driver?
I would have liked to become a farmer.
Who is your motorsport idol?
Kimi Räikkönen is my one time favorite.
What’s your secret to success?
One Team, One dream! For me, team work is one of the most important factors when it comes to success.
