2024 WRC drivers’ championship title

2024 WRC Drivers’ champion Thierry is a true petrol head; he loves being behind the wheel.

His success at junior levels enabled him to step up to World Rally Championship RC in 2009. After finishing second in the 2013 standings, his performance caught the eye of the Hyundai Motorsport team, which signed him for our inaugural season in 2014.

Together, a number of historic firsts were achieved. Thierry scored the team’s first podium in Mexico 2014, and a memorable 1-2 in Rallye Deutschland – the team’s debut victory. Thierry helped the team win our first Manufacturers’ titles in 2019 and 2020, and also spearheaded the ultimate podium lock-out at Acropolis Rally in 2022. In 2024, the Belgian clinched Hyundai Motorsport’s first ever WRC Drivers’ championship title at a nail-biting finale in Japan – achieving his childhood dream after 11 seasons with us.

Hailing from St. Vith in the picturesque Ardennes forest, Thierry is impressively fluent in several languages – a reflection of his versatility both on and off the stages.

Q&A with Thierry

What is your favorite WRC round and why?

It’s a difficult question because there are many rallies I love in the championship, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the Central European Rally. First, because it’s the kind of terrain I love: technical asphalt stages that are often dirty. I learned to drive on this type of surface, so I generally feel at home. Speaking of home, it’s also a rally where my family, friends, and many fans can come to support us because it’s close to Belgium. That makes it a very special event for me.

What do you do to focus before a rally?

I don’t have a special routine to get focused. When you’ve been driving for a long time, I think you automatically switch into event mode when the time comes. I usually prepare the event the weekend before the rally by checking maps, watching the videos provided, and getting everything in mind. Then, once recce starts, it’s like being in a bubble and switching to “rally mode.” Everything is perfectly timed and organized, and I follow the tight schedule we have during the week.

Which profession would you have chosen if you hadn’t become a rally driver?

I would have become a driving instructor instead.

Who is your motorsport idol?

My idol while growing up was my compatriot Bruno Thiry, but I was also a Schumacher fan in F1.

What’s your secret to success?

The secret to success is to never give up. Along the way, you will have ups and downs (in fact, more downs than ups) but that’s when you need to hold on and learn to get stronger. That’s when you build your strength, and that’s what finally leads you to success.
