All three BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse drivers head to the season finale
After 12 action-packed races and plenty of emotional highs and lows, one final event stands between BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse and Kumho FIA TCR World Tour glory: The Macau Guia Race.
A 6.120-kilometre circuit with a blend of high-speed corners and long straights, plus undulating wall-lined sections and a narrowest pass of just seven metres, the Circuito da Guia demands precision and afford drivers no margin for error.
But it’s a track where BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse has tasted success before and naturally aims to do so again as the 2024 season comes to a close, with Norbert Michelisz in pole position to take a second Kumho FIA TCR World Tour crown.
The Hungarian, who took his second Macau win last year en route to the title and also has second and third place podium finishes to his name in Hyundai machinery at the track, heads a three-strong BRC driver roster all with a mathematical shot of winning the Drivers’ honours.
Entering the weekend with a 10-point lead in the standings and no compensation weight, Michelisz nevertheless insists his focus isn’t on playing the percentages.
“Anything can happen in Macau and while it’s a sentence everyone knows, that’s the reality. It’s a particular street circuit where a small mistake can cost you a big amount of time,” says Michelisz. “For this reason, our focus has to be to push 100 per cent to see where we end up.”
A sensational victory in Zhuzhou last month means Mikel Azcona is 27 points behind Michelisz and also in contention for the Drivers’ crown, while Néstor Girolami – who is 72 points behind with 75 still on offer – has a top-three finish overall within his reach.
The BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse trio are among 12 Hyundai Elantra N TCR drivers on a capacity 32-strong Macau entry that also includes defending TCR China champion Martin Cao, Zhang Zhen Dong – who tops the points in TCR Asia – and Irishman Max Hart, the winner of the second Macau TCR China race last season.
