Six i20 N Rally2 crews chase victory in FIA ERC season opener
The FIA European Rally Championship begins a new season in Spain at Rallye Sierra Morena with an incredible six i20 N Rally2 on the entry list for the event.
The ones to watch include Austrian Simon Wagner, arriving at the rally directly from his first victory with the i20 N Rally2 in his home national championship with co-driver Hanna Ostlender, and Frenchman Stephane Lefebvre, who returns to the wheel of a Hyundai i20 N Rally2 after a handful of outings last year. His entry, with Andy Malfoy providing the pacenotes, this weekend marks the start of a season where he will contest the tarmac rounds of the European season with the Belgian Lifelive squad.
Also on the entry list is Welshman James Williams. He stunned the ERC service park by taking an overall stage victory at last year’s Rali Ceredigion but returns to the championship with co-driver Ross Whittock on less familiar terrain.
Czech pair Martin Vlček and Jakub Kunst, and Poles Dariusz Biedrzyński and Rafal Fiołek – both competing in the ERC Masters class – completed the three-car line-up for Kowax DST Racing alongside Wagner and Ostlender.
The Hyundai Motorsport customer line-up for the event is completed by Pepe López and David Vásquez who a running for points in both the FIA ERC and the Spanish Superchampionship, which joins the international series for the weekend. The Hyundai España-backed crew started their season with a podium, but now face not only their domestic rivals, but the European Championship regulars in the overall standings this weekend.
Munster returns to French Gravel championship
Charles Munster and Loris Pascaud are the lone i20 N Rally2 customers on the start line for the 2025 French Gravel Rally Championship at Rallye Terre des Causses.
Though numbers may not be on their side, form certainly is. The i20 N Rally2 proved to be a strong package in the championship last year, with a crew with the car on the podium for every event of the 2024 season.
Munster finished fifth on the event in 2023, when it was his first gravel event with the i20 N Rally2 and has gone on to claim multiple podium finishes in the series over the last two year, while he searches for a first rally win in the championship.
Dutch season kicks off with former champion hoping for strong start
The new season of Dutch rallying begins with the Zuiderzee Rally, where former national champion Kevin Van Deijne will aim to get his year off to a strong start.
An early retirement in the rally last year began a tough title defence for van Deijne and co-driver Hein Verschuuren in 2024, as they claimed only one win during the year. However, their pace in the i20 N Rally2 never wavered so they should be amongst the front-runners when action resumes for 2025 for the nine-stage event.
They will be joined on the entry list by Swedish driver Stig Andervang and Sven Hakkesteeg, his Dutch co-driver for the weekend. Andervang has had a busy – and successful – start to his year, scoring two wins and a second place in small, local rallies already this year.
Stefan Göttig and Natalie Solbach-Schmidt complete the trio of i20 N Rally2 crews on the event, making the first start in a national championship this year after two top five results in local events in Germany.
