Sordo leads new-look Team Hyundai Portugal line-up for first time

The new look line-up for Team Hyundai Portugal makes its first appearance in the Portuguese Rally Championship this weekend at Rali Serras de Fafe – Felgueiras – Boticas e Cabeceiras de Basto (March 7-8).

The Hyundai Portugal-supported team – whose drivers have won the national title for the past two seasons – is led on the stages this year by former Hyundai Motorsport FIA World Rally Championship driver Dani Sordo. Sordo, who was unveiled as a driver for the i20 N Rally2 team at an event last month, has plenty of experience on the gravel event.

He last competed on the rally in an Rally2 car in 2021 but was the overall victor aboard an i20 R5 in 2019. On top of this, the event shares many stretches of road with Portugal’s annual WRC round, where Sordo scored three consecutive podiums between 2021 and 2023. He will be joined by co-driver Candido Carrera.

Hugo Lopes will make his debut in a Hyundai i20 N Rally2, driving the second Team Hyundai Portugal entry on the stages. The event will also be his first start in the top class of the national championship, having previously been a front-runner among the 2-wheel-drive entrants in the series, claiming four victories in the class last year. Two of those victories came with Magda Oliveira as co-driver, a role she will fill at the 2025 season opener as well.

International i20 N Rally2 crews to start Italian Gravel season

The Italian Gravel Rally Championship begins at the Rally Città di Foligno (March 8-9), with a pair of i20 N Rally2 crews on the entry list.

Fabio Andolfi and his Swiss co-driver Marco Menchini already have one overall win to their names in the i20 N Rally2 this year, having taken victory at the 40km-long Ronde della Val Merula, where they won all four stages. This weekend’s gravel event, however, will present a much tougher challenge against a strong international entry list.

Among the visitors are Finnish crew Benjamin Korhola and Kristian Temonen. Like Andolfi, Korhola has made a fast start to 2025, with an overall podium on snow in the Finnish national championship before taking second overall – and winning the Under-25 class – at a small gravel event in Italy in preparation for his next challenge.

After starting a number of mostly tarmac events in Italy in 2024, Korhola will continue to develop his career this season, combining commitments in Finland with further starts on both tarmac and gravel at Italian events.
