Sordo and Team Hyundai Portugal join country’s WRC round
The Portuguese Rally Championship has, arguably, its biggest event of the season, as it joins the FIA World Rally Championship’s stop in the country at Rally de Portugal. The national event only runs up to the conclusion of Friday’s action, but that still covers 11 stages that will be run without a full service, with only a pair of short remote services punctuating the day.
After finishing second on each of the first three round of the national championship in his Team Hyundai Portugal-run i20 N Rally2, Dani Sordo is still search for his first victory of the season and the familiar stages of the WRC event could be best chance yet. After contesting the previous round with a different co-driver, the Spaniard will be reunited with Cándido Carrera for the weekend. The second of the Hyundai Portugal-supported cars will be driven be Gonçalo Henriques and Inês Veiga.
Not only does the rally present a gruelling challenge over rough gravel stages, but it gives both crews an opportunity to measure up against not only their domestic rivals, but the best of the WRC2 field. After all, though the national rally ends on Friday, the Portuguese championship crews have the option to complete the rest of the rally as part of the international field.
Camilli heads to home round of French championship
A year on from the i20 N Rally2’s first victory in the French Tarmac Rally Championship, the series returns to the Mediterranean coast for Rally d’Antibes – Côte d’Azur.
Eric Camilli and Thibault de la Haye took their 2C Competition-prepared entry to victory on the driver’s home round of the championship. Just like 12 months ago, the pair arrive at the third round of the championship, having taken second place at the previous round. CHL Sport Auto crew Hugo Margaillan and Mathieu Coppa finished fourth at the previous round and still seek their first podium result of the season. In last year’s trip to Antibes, Margaillan finished fifth, but showed strong pace, winning his first stage with the i20 N Rally2 on the event’s finale.
