Edwards and Williams runners-up in incredibly tight finish in Ireland

In his first competitive outing with the i20 N Rally2, C & M Motorsport driver Matt Edwards finished a strong second on the Midland Stages (March 2) in Ireland.

Alongside co-driver Sion Williams for the opening round of the Irish National Rally Championship, Edwards was part of an extremely close battle for victory. The fastest time on SS3, the final test of the opening loop of the contest, was the first of three consecutive stage wins for the i20 N Rally2 crew which lifted them into the lead, holding a four-second advantage after SS5.

However, fortunes continued to change. After losing time on SS6 they dropped back into second, before retaking the lead after a fourth stage win on SS7 to start the final three-stage loop.

The result was only decided on the final stage. Edwards and Williams started the last test with the advantage but, though they lost out to their rivals by under a second over the 14.7km stage it was still enough to see them pushed back to second. The difference in the final standings was just half a second – one of the closest finishes ever in the highly competitive championship.

Edwards’ and C & M Motorsport’s attentions now switch to the opening round of Irish Tarmac Rally Championship later in March.

Podium finish starts Zaldivar’s 2025 campaigns

Reigning FIA CODASUR Rally champions Fau Zaldivar and Marcelo Der Ohannesian began their title defence with a third-place finish at Rally Trans Itapúa (February 28-March 2), Paraguayan Zaldivar’s home round of the continental championship.

The Hyundai Paraguay-supported pair started the event off with the quickest time on the short opening stage. However, while their pace remained strong throughout the rest of rally – which was also the opening round of the national championship in Paraguay – it was to be their only stage win of the weekend.

Their performance was more than enough to keep them in the podium places. They reached the overnight halt second, only three seconds adrift of the leaders, and completed the overall podium in the final standings, though still less than seven seconds in arrears to the victors in a closely fought event.

The result gave the i20 N Rally2 crew a good points haul to begin their campaigns in both championships, especially compared to the same event last year, when they retired from the event.
