Sordo begins Portuguese season with second place
Former WRC driver Dani Sordo began his season with the i20 N Rally2 and Team Hyundai Portugal in the Portuguese Rally Championship at the Rali Serras de Fafe – Felgueiras – Boticas e Cabeceiras de Basto (March 7-8).
The gravel rallies stages – often transformed into mud by the combination of rain and wheel tracks – presented the competing crews with incredibly slippery conditions. In a relatively unfamiliar car, Sordo and co-driver Candido Carrera searched for grip, and the correct set-up for their i20 N Rally2.
Despite the difficulties, the Spanish pair recorded two stage victories and held a podium position throughout the event, even after they suffered a puncture on the first stage on Saturday. The experienced duo reached the end of the rally in second overall, their points from the opening weekend boosted by victory on the Power Stage finale, which took crews over the final jump made famous in the World Rally Championship.
Hugo Lopes’ debut with both the i20 N Rally2 and Team Hyundai Portugal got off to a promising start, despite running in some of the most treacherous conditions of his career. He and co-driver Magda Oliveira set top-ten times in each of the first three stages – though their overall position was affected by a 1-minute penalty for arriving early at a Time Control. They had recovered to the edge of the top ten before SS6, where they were forced to retire from the event.
Finnish crew fight for victory on Italian Gravel
Benjamin Korhola and Kristian Temonen won two stages at the Rally Città di Foligno in the Italian Gravel Championship (March 8-9).
Carrying the colours of Pacco Motorsport on their G.B. Motors-run i20 N Rally2, the Finnish pair rose steadily up the order after starting the rally with the eighth quickest time on the opening stage. After winning back-to-back stages on SS5 and SS6 the crew took the lead, extending their advantage after SS7 – the first stage of the final loop.
Korhola and Temonen began the final stage with a slender advantage, only for a mechanical problem to take them out of contention for victory.
Italian driver Fabio Andolfi and Swiss co-driver Marco Menchini, sharing another i20 N Rally2 on the stages, were consistent. The pair held a top-five spot going into SS7, where they unfortunately crashed out, ending their rally early.
