Double podium continues strong start to season in Portugal
Team Hyundai Portugal drivers Dani Sordo and Gonçalo Henriques finished second and third on Rallye Casinos do Algarve (March 27-29) in a strong result for the Hyundai Portugal-supported team.
Sordo and co-driver Cándido Carrera one six of the events eight stages. However, a technical issue on SS2 on meant that their pace was critical mainly in their climb from as low as 14th overall to claim the runner-up spot only 13 seconds behind the victors, after earlier trailing by 50 seconds. As the did at the opening round, the Spanish pair was claimed the maximum bonus points for victory on the power stage – keeping their close behind their rivals in the early championship standings.
Equally impressive, though for different reasons was the performance of Henriques and co-driver Inês Veiga. In their first event in a Rally2-spec car the pair were brilliantly consistent, with top ten times throughout and a best stage result of third – coming on the two passes though the 24km Messines stage, the longest of the gravel rally. They were able to claim the final step on the podium, finishing ahead of far more experienced crews.
Wagner scores first national championship win for i20 N Rally2 Step2
Austrian driver Simon Wagner claimed a dominant win in the Rebenland Rallye (March 28-29) to log the first national championship victory of the i20 N Rally2 Step2.
Debuted at Rallye du Var in France in November 2024, the i20 N Rally2 Step2 represents the largest single package of upgrades developed for the i20 N Rally2 since its introduction in 2021. Including enhancements to the front and rear kinematics, and electronic wastegate, new engine mapping and further options for the gearbox and differential to allow customers to better set the car up for their personal preferences and the demands of individual rallies.
Wagner and his German co-driver Hanna Ostlender put all these upgrades, and their skill, to perfect use on the rally – the first tarmac event of the national season in Austria. The duo won half of the 16 competitive stages, including the Power Stage as they led the rally from start to finish.
Their speed and the reliability of the i20 N Rally2, running faultlessly as some of their competitors tumbled down the order with mechanical issues, allowed them to build a commanding lead, finish the rally with a lead of near 1:40.
In their first major rally with the car, Slovenian pair Ivan Hrženjak and Rok Gomizelj narrowly missed out on a top ten finish – losing tenth place on the final stage. Their pace, and so overall standing, improved throughout the weekend. They were regulars in the top ten stage times during the second leg, but the 11th fastest time on the finale dropped them to the same position in the final results.
