Filippi and Gottsacker deliver second Elantra N TCR to start season

Bryan Herta Autosport drivers Mason Filippi and Harry Gottsacker gave the Hyundai Motor America-supported team a second straight victory to start the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season at Sebring International Raceway (March 12-14).

Filippi started their #98 entry from the outside of an all Elantra N TCR front row, with teammate Bryson Morris starting from pole position. However, though they had proven their pace over a single lap in qualifying the two Hyundai drivers slipped down the order in the opening laps – Morris to third, Filippi fifth. Unusually for a race in the series the two-hour event ran without a Safety Car intervention, and better pace towards the end of a stint lifted the two Elantra N TCR back to first and second following the mid-race driver change pistops, with Mark Wilkins in the #33 now leading Gottsacker.

Able to hold a comfortable advantage at the front, the two Bryan Herta Autosport cars ran 1-2. In the final laps they were joined at the top of the TCR leaderboard by the #99 Elantra N TCR of Victor Gonzalez Racing Team, driven by Tyler Gonzalez, and the trio started the final lap 1-2-3, but the relentless pace of the race had a few final twists. Gonzalez was one of many drivers to run out of fuel on the final lap – leaving the track peppered with stationary cars – and while Wilkins crossed the line first ahead of Gottsacker, the #33 team were penalised after the race for a technical infringement, leading Filippi and Gottsacker the victors.
