i30 N TCR drivers make strong start to new TCR UK season
Hyundai Motorsport customers scored three podiums over the opening weekend of the new TCR UK season on the Donington Park National Circuit (March 22-23).
The best result for the i30 N TCR drivers came in Sunday afternoon’s Race 3, when Callum Newsham and Finn Leslie scored a 1-2 for Hyundai Motorsport customers. The result completed an up-and-down weekend for 2024 title contender Newsham, who started the meeting with a retirement, before driving from the back row of the Race 2 grid to take second in a contest run on a damp, but drying track that split tyre choices for the field.
Newsham’s Race 3 win came after he made a strong start to take the lead in his JH Racing-run car and then had to repeat the act after the race red flagged after the opening lap. Second place for Finn Leslie capped his superb debut weekend in TCR racing. The Power Maxed Racing driver was fourth in Race 1 and 2, before taking his maiden podium.
His fellow debutants Rod McGovern and Harry Bloor scored best results of fifth and sixth respectively, while Alistair Camp failed to register a finish in the opening weekend of his first full season in the championship.
Elantra N TCR scores class podium on debut in Japanese championship
The Waimarama Racing team gave the Elantra N TCR its Super Taikyu debut in the first round of the season for the Japanese endurance racing championship.
The entry for the four-hour race at Motegi (March 22-23) was shared by drivers ‘Kizuna’, Lee Jung Woo and Katsumasa Chiyo. The team qualified 11th overall – second in the TCR class, the combined fastest laps of ‘Kizuna’ and Chiyo less than a second off the class leaders’ efforts.
They were equally on the pace throughout the race, finishing third in class, and tenth overall, less than 3 seconds behind the second placed TCR team.
