Mikel Azcona

About Mikel

Mikel took no time at all to adapt to his new role as a Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing driver. In his first season driving the Elantra N TCR he won the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup title after a superb season. The win cemented his reputation as one of the undisputed stars of the TCR category. He began his racing career in the Renault Clio Cup Spain before moving up to the Renault Clio Eurocup, finishing second in the championship aged 18. Mikel was a runner-up again in the 2016 SEAT Leon Eurocup and the 2017 Audi Sport TT Cup. However in 2018 he claimed his first ever title, winning the TCR Europe Touring Car Series. This impressive performance saw him achieve a drive at the pinnacle of touring car racing for the 2019 season. Over his three years in WTCR, the Spaniard has taken three victories – one in each season – and 12 podiums. In 2021, he competed once again in the TCR Europe Touring Car Series alongside his WTCR commitments and emphatically secured his second drivers’ title. After joining Hyundai Motorsport for the 2022 season he continued his remarkable career. He took his first world title with Hyundai Motorsport in 2022, as well as being part of the class-winning team at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2022 – an achievement he repeated the following year. 2023 also marked the latest step in his career. He, together with WTCR team-mate Norbi Michelisz and the BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse team made the move to the new TCR World Tour contest. Mikel claimed one win among six podium finishes on his way to finish fifth in the points’ standings.
