Paddon and Kennard in pole position for FIA ERC title
Hayden Paddon and John Kennard start the final round of the FIA European Rally Championship in pole position to take their second consecutive title in the series. The Kiwi pair start Rally Silesia with a 27-point advantage at the top of the standings after their dominant performance and first victory of the season at Rali Ceredigion in Wales at the start of September. The previous six rounds have narrowed the championship race to just two crews – the BRC Racing Team i20 N Rally2 duo and their nearest rivals. A maximum of 35 points – 30 for victory and five for winning the Power Stage – remain on offer from the Polish event. The rally is brand new to the championship, presenting fresh – and in Paddon and Kennard’s case, perhaps unwanted – challenges for nearly every crew on the entry list.
Kris Meeke leads standings into Portuguese Rally Championship finale
The Portuguese Rally Championship season comes to a close at Rally Vidreiro Centro de Portugal, with Team Hyundai Portugal driver Kris Meeke holding the points’ lead. After winning five of the seven rounds of his first full season in the country, the Ulsterman brings an 18-point lead into the finale. Promisingly, at no point this season has Meeke been outscored by more than this margin. If he wins the title he will follow in the footsteps of his Hyundai Portugal supported team-mate Ricardo Teodósio. He and co-driver José Teixeira sit third in the standings, out of title contention after a frustrating campaign that has included two podiums, including second at the previous round when they completed a 1-2 finish for the team. A matching result this weekend would end Teodósio and Teixeira’s 2024 on a high and – of course – secure the title for Meeke.
